That creamy, savory, sweet white sauce holds the top spot in the hearts of Americans, according to a 2017-2018 study by the Association for Dressings & Sauces.
The history of the buttery, flavorful dressing goes back to 1950s California, where Steve and Gayle Henson served it to guests of their Hidden Valley Ranch. The condiment was popular enough for them to expand into bottling and selling their own line of ranch dressing, which is still in business today.
But as you know if you've been down the salad dressing aisle at your local supermarket, ranch has exploded in popularity since then. It's now produced by major food companies in dozens of varieties, from the classic buttermilk to the spicier buffalo ranch.
It's also expanded beyond its origins as a salad dressing and is commonly used as a dipping sauce for crispy snacks like french fries, onion rings and pizza.
