The word "fortnight" might not used too much on this side of the pond, but in England, this classic term meaning two weeks is still very much in practice. Often associated with holidays or breaks, a typical Briton may talk about going away for a fortnight, inquire about renting a room for a fortnight, or look forward to something coming up in a fortnight. The etymology is laughably simple too. It has nothing to do with forts, but instead, is a condensed version of "fourteen" and "night" to imply a number of days equal to two weeks.
