Waitress: And to drink?

Chuck: Coke

Waitress: Pepsi okay?

Chuck: Pepsi. Is Pepsi okay? No. No, my dear lady, Pepsi is not okay. Look, I don't mean to be rude here but let me school you on something.

See, Pepsi, this so-called choice of a new generation, is nothing but a charlatan, a fraud, an imposter.

See, the Pepsi corporation, through years of slick advertising using glitzy popstars and pseudo-scientific research, have somehow convinced the public that their product is as good as, if not better than, Coke.

Coke, however, is the original cola based carbonated beverage. The original real thing.

That is what I want.

Waitress: All we have is Pepsi.

Chuck: You know, I've been somewhere else where they don't let you decide what you want to drink:
Red China.

Dr. Peter McCullough Says Autopsies Show The COVID Shot’s ‘Fingerprints’ Are Everywhere, Including The Brain [VIDEOS]

Dr. Peter McCullough recently shared the details of just how embedded the COVID shots make themselves into the human body, explaining that the shots leave a “fingerprint” from the heart to even the brain – something McCullough said is a “disconcerting” first in the realm of vaccines.

“We now know in people who have had autopsies, after being vaccinated shortly after being vaccinated, they’ve had autopsies – these were done in Vienna, Austria, and Germany – we can see the fingerprint of the vaccine everywhere in the body.

It’s in the brain, it’s in the heart, it’s in the bone marrow, it’s in the reproductive organs and the lymph nodes. This is also a first, we’ve never had a vaccine that goes into the human brain. As an example, we’ve never had a vaccine go into the human heart. And so just these observations alone are very disconcerting.”

The Surprising Origins of
8 Common Idioms

Idioms are short phrases that often make no literal sense but are nonetheless universally understood by the native speakers of a language. As part of any vernacular, idioms are quirky, playful, and sometimes even strange, but the most charming thing about them is their specificity of culture — like an inside joke shared by millions. Someone still learning English might be baffled to hear that they’d been “let off the hook,” though almost anyone raised in an English-speaking community would understand the meaning.

For many idioms, the literal meaning of the words is lost over time, but a general meaning of the phrase is understood through common use. Take, for instance, being let off the hook. Dating back to the 18th century, the phrase evokes the image of a worm on the end of a fishing line. If it can wiggle itself off the hook, it can avoid being eaten by a fish. Likewise, a child caught stealing a cookie might beg and plead themselves out of being reprimanded, thereby getting themselves off the hook. Here are the little-known origin stories behind eight other common English idioms.

Wear your heart on your sleeve
To wear your heart on your sleeve is to be honest and open about your feelings. The phrase is generally believed to have originated in the Middle Ages. It was the custom then for jousting knights to wear some sort of insignia on their arm that indicated the ladies for whom they were hoping to triumph, thus proclaiming their love to the world.

Pardon my French
In England, in the early 1800s, people would “beg pardon” for using French words in conversation. Forgiveness was requested in these instances because most people did not speak French, and furthermore, the Napoleonic Wars had left a residue of animosity between the two countries. By the mid-1800s the phrase had evolved to refer to swear words specifically. It’s worth noting that the Cambridge dictionary defines the idiom as something to be said when pretending to be sorry for offensive language.

The best thing since sliced bread
In 1928, when inventor Otto Frederick Rohwedder of Davenport Iowa first released his bread loaf-slicing invention, the advertisement claimed it was “the greatest forward step in the baking industry since bread was wrapped.” Riffing on the theme, customers began to compare all later inventions to his, and the modern idiom evolved from there.

With flying colors
This idiom dates back to the Age of Exploration, the period when European explorers first set off across the seas. If a captain had been successful in his venture, he would order the crew to fly their country’s flag (or “colors”) to announce their victory before arriving back at the home port. Originally, the phrase “with flying colors” simply meant that a mission had been completed without disaster, but over the centuries the idiom came to signify great success.

Apple of my eye
To be the apple of someone’s eye is to be their most adored companion, but what exactly is an eye apple? This idiom is one of the oldest in the English language, traced back to the ninth century. Back then, it was assumed that the pupil of the eye was a round, solid object, and it was often compared to an apple, as apples were a commonly known round object. The delicate nature of sight (and its tendency to fade with age) made vision precious and over the years the phrase “apple of my eye” came to be used in reference to anything or anyone a person held dear.

Head over heels

If being “head over heels” is to be in love, you might think we walked around all day soaked in romance, because when was the last time anyone’s head wasn’t over their heels? In the 1300s, this phrase was used more literally to describe someone tumbling through a handstand or cartwheel, but by the 1800s writers had begun to use the phrase idiomatically to describe someone who had fallen hopelessly in love.

Buttering up
To butter someone up is to beguile them, or to lavish them with praise to get what we want. The idiom evolved from the very literal buttering that takes place as part of the Hindu tradition of throwing balls of clarified butter (called ghee) at the statues of deities. In exchange for the offering, it was thought that buttered-up gods would reward the faithful with a good harvest.

Cutting the mustard
There is much speculation regarding the origin of this idiom, but the most reputable sources trace its usage from the late 1600s when the phrase “keen as mustard” was used to describe someone of high standards. Combined with “cutting,” which is often used in place of “exhibiting” (think: cutting a fine figure), and you get the modern, idiomatic equivalent of “exhibiting high standards.”

"While you are riding the wave you just put your

Freida Pinto

After finding herself thrust into the spotlight after her captivating performance in the Oscar-winning 2008 film Slumdog Millionaire, actor Freida Pinto shared these words of advice about fame. Not knowing where the wave of fortune would take her, or how long it would last, Pinto resolved to simply enjoy the thrill of the ride.

It’s easy to get so swept up in life’s worries and anxieties that we forget to pause and soak up the positive, joyous moments. None of us can control what happens next — all we can do is be the best version of ourselves, and make the most of what we have right here and now.

20 Quotes to Remind Us
to Stop and Rest

While productivity and activity are valued in most cultures, it's important to balance these drives with rest and relaxation. When we rest, we can set aside our ambitions and worries, and restore and renew our bodies and minds.

Being active and then inactive is a natural and necessary cycle. Just as a dormant winter leads to a fruitful spring, resting leads to new growth and possibility. Whether it's a night of sleep or an informal break, a period of repose often brings us fresh perspectives and creative insights when we return to a project or situation.

Rest is also a powerful antidote to stress. Time off provides respite from our to-do lists, and an opportunity to dream, heal, and just be. Stepping away from obligations and letting the world spin on its own for a while is not always easy, though. Taking small steps, like pausing for a few deep breaths throughout the day, creating peaceful bedtime rituals, and scheduling purposefully unproductive time during the week can help us establish new habits and achieve a more tranquil pace.

Each of us is more than the set of tasks we can accomplish, and we all deserve to slow down, take vacations, and recharge, as these 20 quotes attest.

Take rest; a field that has rested gives a bountiful crop.
— Ovid

Sometimes, the most important thing in a whole day is the rest we take between two deep breaths, or the turning inwards in prayer for five short minutes.
— Etty Hillesum, Dutch Jewish author

— Hobbes of the “Calvin and Hobbes” comics by Bill Watterson

Everyone has the right to rest and leisure, including reasonable limitations of working hours and periodic holidays with pay.
— Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Stop saying rest is a luxury or a privilege. It is not — it’s a human right… it gives us the space to embody and live in divinity.
— Tricia Hersey, artist and activist

We need society, and we need solitude also, as we need summer and winter, day and night, exercise and rest.
— Philip Gilbert Hamerton, British artist and author

— Bob Dylan

Those who are wise won't be busy, and those who are too busy can't be wise. The wisest man is therefore he who loafs most gracefully.
— Lin Yutang, Chinese writer and inventor

Lay down your head a while, you are not needed now.
— Townes Van Zandt, singer-songwriter

To lie sometimes on the grass under the trees on a summer's day, listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the blue sky, is by no means a waste of time.
— John Lubbock, British politician and naturalist

Allow yourself to be like [the] pebble at rest. The pebble is resting at the bottom of the river, and the pebble does not have to do anything.
— Thích Nh?t H?nh

Except for the point, the still point,
there would be no dance, and there is only the dance.
— T.S. Eliot

I still need more healthy rest in order to work at my best. My health is the main capital I have, and I want to administer it intelligently.
— Ernest Hemingway

O, what is more sweet than when the mind, set free from care, lays its burden down; and, when spent with distant travel, we come back to our home, and rest our limbs on the wished-for bed? This, this alone, repays such toils as these!

13 Things You Can Scavenge
From Cars After The SHTF

Cars are everywhere. If you’re anywhere near a city when the SHTF, you’ll come across thousands of them. And if the disaster is severe enough, many of these vehicles will be abandoned. Why does this matter? Because there are many survival items you can scavenge from abandoned vehicles.

Some people will object to this article, saying it’s wrong to take what isn’t yours. Normally I’d agree, but I believe morality varies depending on the circumstances. If you’re in a situation where an apparently abandoned vehicle has items in it that you need to survive, then I would argue that you’re morally obligated to take them. If not for yourself, then for your family.

Besides, you could find yourself in a scenario where your own car breaks down or is totaled, in which case you might want to make use of its parts. In case either of these things ever happens to you, here are 13 things you can scavenge from vehicles.

1. Whatever is in the Trunk
The first thing you should check is the trunk. Many people keep tools, flashlights, jumper cables, blankets, and even extra clothing in the trunk. Most people who abandon their vehicles would probably try to take some of those things with them, but not necessarily. If you check a hundred vehicles, you’re bound to come across some goodies.

2. Whatever is in the Glove Box or Center Console
Here you might find food, lighters, first aid supplies, papers you can use to help start fires, etc. Again, you never know, so if you’re walking down a highway full of abandoned cars, check as many glove boxes and center consoles as you can.

3. Mirrors
Now that the obvious stuff is out of the way, the first thing you should consider taking is the rearview mirror. If it’s stuck on the glass with adhesive, you might be able to remove it with a razor blade. Otherwise, you could just break it off. To get the side mirrors out, you’ll need a knife or similar object. Mirrors can be used for many things including signaling for help and starting fires.

4. Seats
The fabric in seats can make excellent insulation material in cold environments, and the seat covers can be used as ground covers. If the seats are leather, you can even turn them into useful items such as shoes, leggings, or a carrying pack.

5. Seat Belts
If you don’t have any cordage, use the seat belts. Just extend them as far as they will go and cut them out. If you need a cord that’s not as thick, just cut up the seat belt into smaller strands. If you unravel them enough, you could even use them as fishing line.

6. Lid, Hood, and Doors
I grouped these together because they can all be used for the same thing: building a shelter. These things will be difficult to remove without the proper tools, but they can be very useful. For example, it’s very easy to set up a lean-to with the hood of a car. And in the winter, the doors could be used as sleds.

7. Windows
The top part of the glass on car doors can be used to sharpen knives. Break off this part and wrap duct tape around the jagged edges and you’ll have a portable knife sharpener. You could also try using some of the broken glass as a cutting tool, but this might be difficult since car glass tends to fall apart into little pieces when broken.

8. Battery
You can use a car battery to keep your devices charged during an emergency. But to do this, you’ll also need some 12v receptacles and a power inverter. Watch this video to learn how. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lc3rtn5ducY

9. Wiring
The wires in the engine could be used as cordage for any number of things such as constructing shelters, making snares, bundling things together so they’re easier to carry, etc.

10. Headlights
The glass from a headlight can be used as a cutting tool if the piece is long and sharp enough and the rest is wrapped in duct tape to make a handle. And the lamp and case from a headlight can be used to make a fire if the lens reflector has been well polished.

To do so, put some tinder in the reflector that holds the bulb and put it under the sun. Both sides, being highly reflective, will magnify the sunlight and direct heat to the tinder. Hopefully, an ember will be created in the tinder that you can blow on to start a fire. (Something similar can be done with a flashlight.)

11. Tires
Modern tires, unfortunately, don’t have as many uses as older tires due to the steel cable running through them. Nonetheless, you can still burn tires for signaling purposes since the black smoke can be seen for miles on a clear day. But be warned: tire burning is illegal in most areas, so proceed with caution. Tire smoke is also toxic so keep your distance.

12. Tubes
The inner tubes can be cut up into rubber bands which have all sorts of uses: tourniquets, shelter making, strapping items to your clothes or pack, and so forth.

13. Gasoline
As long as you have a siphon of some kind, you could use leftover gasoline for your own vehicle. Gas could also be used to get a fire going, as long as you’re very careful. Don’t puncture a fuel tank for gas as even a small spark is enough to make a gas tank explode, even if very little fuel is present.

6 Things You Can Scavenge from
Old Lawnmowers

After a couple years of repairs and replacements, you’ve just got to accept that your lawnmower is not immortal. Even this grass-eating machine has an expiration date. But don’t haul that bad boy off to the dump just yet.

Instead of adding another hunk of metal to your local landfill, consider disassembling your lawnmower and repurposing its parts. In the spirit of homesteading, every piece of metal, plastic, and cordage can be reused somewhere around your house or property.

We’ve broken down your options so that you can break down your lawnmower. Piece by piece, here are six repurposing ideas to get your wheels spinning…

1. Cordage
A lawn mower’s starter cord is usually around 7 feet of tough rope that you can find a purpose for immediately…

Clothing or Camping Line – Your lawnmower’s cord is most likely a double or triple-braided rope, which makes it quite the durable find. With that in mind, it is fit to hold a bit of weight. Try tying both ends to a pole or tree and now you’ve got a handy hanging line for the outdoors.

Hauling Equipment – A lawn mower pull cord is pretty long and pretty strong, perfect to bundle items. Tie up a bundle of chopped wood, or thread your screwdrivers and now you’ve got an easy-carry system.

Bag Straps – Do you have some old worn-out backpacks with torn straps? Don’t throw them out just yet! Replace the straps with some old lawnmower cords. They’re usually thick enough to hold the weight of your bag, but if not, you can make a fancy braid for extra support.

A Basic Snare Trap – Imagine you’re in the middle of tough times and need to catch some food. Head over to your lawnmower, extract the cordage and set up a quick snare. You can catch big animals or small, depending on how long your cord may be.

2. The Blades
Depending on the brand, lawnmowers can have up to seven blades. These blades are tough and can be sharpened – so, why would you ever throw them away?

Knife Blades – The most obvious way to reuse your lawn mower blades is to turn them into knives. A knife for protection, a machete for chopping through the brush, or a simple backyard knife – whatever. There will be some metalwork involved, so check out this video tutorial on how to shape and finish your knife.

Small Parts – Some of those old mower blades are pretty small and thin, so here is where the metal work comes in again. You can carve these pieces of metal into small tools like hinges and shelf brackets. Have fun with the ways in which you can reshape and repurpose your metal with this wood stump workshop tutorial!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsywnQJMJEk

Electrolysis Tank – If you haven’t already heard of one, an Electrolysis Tank is a contraption for removing rust, and it’s pretty popular since it’s so easy to assemble at home. You can DIY this electrolysis tank using the blades as metal rods. Check it out in this tutorial. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j69rsiG7og4

3. Engine
Sometimes, our lawnmower’s infrastructure fails but the engine still has some kick to it. If that’s the case, take that sucker and reuse it!

Wheelbarrow – If that old engine still has some kick to it, then how about fixing it up to make an engine-powered wheelbarrow! It may sound odd, but if you’re doing a lot of gardening and landscaping, then it’ll make life a lot easier. You can even reuse those old wheels and handlebars, too.

Generator – With a little welding and some power tools, you can turn that old engine into a generator! The best part of this project? It’s surprisingly easy once you’ve got the right parts! All you need is the engine, the alternator, a cast-iron pulley, electrical wires, an industrial V belt, some brackets, and you’re good to go.

4. Oil
Drain the old oil out of your lawnmower engine so that you get some use out of every last drop.

Preventing Termites – I know, I know! When you think about it, coating your whole barn or furniture with motor oil is… not ideal. However, you can use oil on the tips and corners of wooden fences, boards, and posts to prevent termites from eating through the base.

Make a torch – When the electricity is out for days, go syphon the oil out of your machines for a makeshift torch. Get a sock or some old rags and a stick. Just wrap the rag around the end to make it look like a cotton swab, and dip the end in motor oil.

5. Handle Bar
Here’s a video to show you how to remove the handle from your lawnmower. That was the hard part! Now, the fun part…

Clothing Rack – With some nuts and bolts, you can attach your de-rusted handlebar to your wall. Just like with any other wall rack, hang towels or clothes on it.

Rolling Bar Cart – Who said every repurpose had to be super practical? Here’s a chic addition to your home in the form of a rolling bar cart. In addition to your handlebars, you’ll need a few metal shelves to create a home bar that your friends will love.

6. Dry Grass
Check your grass collection bag or bin before you start tossing things out! When times are tough, every bit of green material counts.

Natural Fertilizer – Did you know that you don’t actually have to remove the grass clippings after you’ve cut your lawn? We do this because we want the yard to look nice, but you can literally leave the grass on your lawn, and it’ll decompose to provide nutrients for the soil.

Animal Feed – If you’re raising animals, then store the dry grass for extra animal feed in the winter. As long as you haven’t been growing your grass with chemicals, then it’s perfectly safe for your livestock.

Compost – Some people would rather just toss dry grass aside, but don’t forget that it’s a great addition to your compost pile. Green grass won’t compost on its own, however. Remember to balance out the brown materials with green materials.

With the right equipment and a little imagination, there are tons of ways you can repurpose an old lawnmower. While this may feel like extra effort, think of the benefits! By disassembling and reusing all of these parts, you are saving money, learning new skills, and most importantly, not contributing to soil pollution!

Why Alien’s gender politics run a lot deeper than Ellen Ripley
The revelation that Lambert is a trans woman transforms what we know about Ridley Scott’s sci-fi horror.

Strip away the gothic, space-bound horror and Alien is about a rational woman fighting to be heard in an irrational, male-dominated world. Yet look beyond Sigourney Weaver’s iconic performance as Ellen Ripley and you’ll notice that the film has far more complex things to say about gender.

Scientists find fossil of dinosaur 'killed on day of asteroid strike' in North Dakota

Scientists believe they have been given an extraordinary view of the last day of the dinosaurs after they discovered the fossil of an animal they believe died that day.

The perfectly preserved leg, which even includes remnants of the animal’s skin, can be accurately dated to the time the asteroid that brought about the dinosaurs’ extinction struck Earth 66m years ago, experts say, because of the presence of debris from the impact, which rained down only in its immediate aftermath.

Bensweather.com Forecast Updated: Monday, Apr 11 @ 12:55am

We'll start the week off a little cooler and breezy out there today as the onshore flow increases ahead of a deepening trough. Highs will drop back into the 50's, closer to average under partly cloudy skies. West to southwest winds also increasing 15-25 mph by afternoon with gusts near 30 mph possible.

Weak low pressure will approach the area this evening with increasing clouds, west winds gusting to around 40 mph overnight as lows cool to the 20's. As this low moves through our area overnight, we could squeeze out a few snow showers with the snow level down around 4,000 feet. Accumulations if any will remain light, but a dusting of snow cannot be ruled out, which is all it takes to make for some icy roads, travel with caution.   :panic:

If you're headed off the mountain also beware of low clouds and fog on the lower coastal slopes. Low pressure will exit the area Tuesday morning setting us up for a cool and breezy day with highs in the 40's. The remainder of the week looks pleasant with near-normal temperatures and dry weather. Another weak trough could brush the area towards Friday or Saturday but I'm not forecasting any rain or snow at this time. When traveling to the mountains during the winter months always be prepared for hazardous driving conditions and carry tire chains.

Writer's block

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Writer's block is a condition, primarily associated with writing, in which an author is unable to produce new work or experiences a creative slowdown. Mike Rose found that this creative stall is not a result of commitment problems or the lack of writing skills.[1] The condition ranges from difficulty in coming up with original ideas to being unable to produce a work for years. Writer's block is not solely measured by time passing without writing. It is measured by time passing without productivity in the task at hand.[1]

How Spotify Is Pushing To Abolish
Police and Prisons

Spotify's Abolition X podcast pushes far-left policies, labels America 'white supremacist' state

A Spotify original podcast featuring Black Lives Matter cofounder and "trained Marxist" Patrisse Cullors calls for abolishing police and prisons, labels America a "white supremacist" state, and contends that the severely mentally ill are actually "shamans" and "spiritual guides."

Spotify launched Abolition X, which "focuses on alternatives to police, jails, and punishment," in February. And while the podcast is chock-full of anti-police and anti-prison rhetoric, it "isn't just about getting rid of police and prisons," Spotify said in a press release. Indeed, hosts Vic Mensa, Indigo Mateo, and Richie Reseda—and their guests—often wade into other topics.

One episode, for example, says gender is merely "an expression." "Gender is, like, swag, you know?" says Reseda, a convicted felon who pleaded guilty to two armed robberies in 2011. "For real, gender is literally a way of expressing one's self. Like, that's really all it is." Another episode on mental health featuring Cullors encourages listeners to microdose mushrooms, calls former president Ronald Reagan "Satan," and even labels bipolar and schizophrenic people as "shamans" whom we "throw … away" because "they don't serve capitalism."

"I'm also a firm believer, especially with people who have severe mental illness, that many of those folks are, like, shamans, and are spiritual guides," Cullors says. "And in this context of capitalism we throw them away. We don't know what to do with them—they don't serve capitalism."

Spotify's release of Abolition X came as the company navigated public scrutiny surrounding its exclusive deal to host The Joe Rogan Experience. After Rogan posted an episode featuring virologist Robert Malone that questioned Democratic policies on COVID-19, musicians asked Spotify to remove their music from the platform, prompting the company to delete thousands of podcast episodes for spreading virus "misinformation."

Best Produce If You Are Dehydrated

Water is one of the essential components of the human body. It is a must for the biological functioning of the body. We have all heard that we must drink a minimum of eight glasses of water every day. You need to drink the required amount of water to prevent health hazards, reduce the risk of stones, maintain cognition, and manage weight. The amount of water that needs to be consumed depends on age, activity level, gender, pregnancy, and other health conditions.

Google now lets you search for things you can’t describe
— by starting with a picture

You like the way that dress looks but you’d rather have it in green. You want those shoes but prefer flats to heels. What if you could have drapes with the same pattern as your favorite notebook? I don’t know how to Google for these things, but Google Search product manager Belinda Zeng showed me real-world examples of each earlier this week, and the answer was always the same: take a picture, then type a single word into Google Lens.

Today, Google is launching a US-only beta of the Google Lens Multisearch feature it teased last September at its Search On event, and while I’ve only seen a rough demo so far, you shouldn’t have to wait long to try it for yourself: it’s rolling out in the Google app on iOS and Android.

Legal Expressions

Planting evidence vs. plants are evidence

Planted evidence is evidence that has been changed, or established at a scene, to make it appear as related to the accused party. For example, samples of blood or saliva can be planted at crime scenes, leading to the innocent being wrongly convicted and the guilty to be acquitted. Planted evidence is not admissible in many courts, including U.S. criminal courts.

Can a Plant Remember? This One Seems to—Here’s the Evidence

There’s this plant I’ve heard about that had a really bad afternoon a few years ago. It was in its pot bothering nobody and then, suddenly, it fell. Not once, but 56 times. (I’ll explain in a minute.) But it’s a plant. Things happen to plants, and as far as I know, they go on as before. They don’t have brains. They have no way to “remember” anything. They’re not animals. So I figure even 56 consecutive falls left no lasting impression.

I figured wrong. I just read an eye-popping paper by Monica Gagliano, associate professor of biology at the University of Western Australia. She’s got a plant that not only “remembered” what happened to it but stored that memory for almost a month. She saw this happen! Here’s the plant:

Gardeners call Mimosa pudica “the sensitive plant,” because if you touch it even lightly or drop it or disturb it, within seconds it folds its teeny leaves into what looks like a frightened or defensive curl. It’s fun to watch it get all shy (two and a half million people have seen this pokey, pokey video. You don’t have to watch it all, but it’ll get you in the mood.)

OK, so it’s highly sensitive. Knowing this, here’s what Gagliano did: She got a bunch of Mimosa pudicas, put them in pots, then loaded each one onto a special plant-dropping device using a sliding steel rail that worked like this:

Each potted plant was dropped roughly six inches, not once, but 60 times in a row at five-second intervals. The plants would glide into a soft, cushiony foam that prevented bouncing. The drop was sufficiently speedy to alarm the plant and cause its teeny leaves to fold into a defensive curl.

To “Eeek!” or Not to “Eeek!”
Six inches, however, is too short a distance to do harm, so what Gagliano wondered was: If she dropped 56 plants 60 times each, would these plants eventually realize nothing terrible was going to happen? Would any of them stop curling?

Or, to put it another way: Could a plant use memory to change its behavior?

To find out, she kept going with her experiment. And, as she writes in her paper, fairly quickly “observed that some individuals did not close their leaves fully when dropped.” In other words, plants seemed to figure out that falling this way wasn’t going to hurt, so more and more of them stopped protecting themselves—until, as she later told a room full of scientists, “By the end, they were completely open … They couldn’t care less anymore.”

Is this evidence of remembering, or is it something else? Maybe, skeptics suggested, all we’re seeing is a bunch of exhausted plants. Curling is work. It takes energy. After 60 drops, these plants may simply be pooped out—that’s why they don’t trigger their defenses. But Gagliano, anticipating this question, took some of those “tired” plants, put them in a shaker, shook them, and instantly they curled up again. “Oh, this is something new,” she imagined them saying, something that hasn’t happened before. That sense of a “before,” she said, is the best explanation for the plants’ change in behavior. They didn’t curl up again because “before” they’d learned there was no need. And they remembered.

A week later—after the shakings—she resumed her drops, and still the plants failed to get alarmed. Their leaves stayed open. She did it again, week after week, and after 28 days, these plants still “remembered” what they’d learned. That’s a long time to store a memory. Bees, she noted, forget what they’ve discovered in a couple of days.

But Without a Brain, How Do They Do It?
“Plants may lack brains,” Gagliano says in her paper, “but they do possess a sophisticated … signaling network.” Could there be some chemical or hormonal “unifying mechanism” that supports memory in plants? It wouldn’t be like an animal brain. It would be radically different, a distributed intelligence, organized in some way we don’t yet understand. But Gagliano thinks Mimosa pudica is challenging us to find out.

Michael Pollan, writing in the New Yorker, hung out with Gagliano last year, went with her to a science meeting, and vividly describes how she was roundly dismissed by many biologists, who bridle at the idea that any plant could be “intelligent.” Plants, they insist, are mainly genetic robots—they can’t learn from experience or change behavior. To say they can “generates strong feelings,” Pollan writes, “perhaps because it smudges the sharp line separating the animal kingdom from the plant kingdom.”

Plants have always been the bronze medalists, one step down from the animals, two steps down from us, the golden ones. By giving plants animal-like talents, Gagliano is mucking up the hierarchies, challenging the order of things.

We like to think because we have such big brains, we’re exceptional. Our trillions of neurons are keys to memory, feelings, consciousness. Brainless creatures by definition can’t do what we do—so of course, plants can’t “remember.”

But Gagliano says maybe they can.

“What we have shown here,” she says at the end of her paper “leads to one clear, albeit quite different, conclusion: the process of remembering may not require the conventional neural networks and pathways of animals; brains and neurons are just one possible, undeniably sophisticated, solution, but they may not be a necessary requirement for learning.”

And who knows? Maybe she just found the plant that will one day prove her right.

"The older I get, the more I want to be authentically myself."

-Julianne Moore

Best known for her roles in films such as Still Alice and Boogie Nights, Academy Award-winning actress Julianne Moore has also authored bestselling children’s books about self-acceptance. The eight installments of her Freckleface Strawberry series were inspired by her girlhood as a conspicuous redhead. Like many young people, Freckleface Strawberry gets her ideas about who she wants to be and what she wants to do from looking outward. Moore, 61, wants to help kids learn a lesson she realized with the passing decades. As she mentions in this quote, growing older* brings clarity, and once you grasp what you like about yourself, determining your priorities becomes easier.
