Here's a True Story that happened to me in 1986, Topanga, California.
It's entitled "The Perils of Censoring Artists".
This was back in the day when I published "Agitprop"' Aggitational Propaganda.
It was the "Omer's Law" series. (MY name was Omer of Topanga)
This was REAL cut and paste, using print medium; graphics and text sirred up into collage and posters and stuff, all designed to mock conventional wisdom, Church, State and the Institution of Marriage, dysfunctional family and police repression.
Photocopy machines made it happen to produce the elements of each project, plus mass copies (usually 20) of the final product.
In town, there was a copy shop, which I frequented regularly. I was always in good standing with the owners & employees.
Now, this one particular time, I was producing a magazine, not a poster. It featured real stories, and parody ads, targeting various negative aspects of American Culture.
It was Top Secret stuff in production.
One day I go to the copyshop and this one gal named Michelle was on duty.
It was routine, until she began badgering me to let her see my stuff.
I said no.
What was I thinking when I gave in? I told her this was "secret shite, etc., so consider yerself fortunate to get a sneek peek at my latest, greatest work".
So I'm running my copies and she's flipping thru my work pages.
About halfway thru my copying work, she says "No. Stop. Stop. You can't do this".
An arguement ensued.
She claimed that she was offened by some of the material.
I claimed that I was OUTRAGED that she would pull this crap on me, AFTER I told her this was secret stuff, and I didn't want to show her....
I gathered up my things, didn't pay and stormed out, telling everybody on scene what went down. Peeps said "Oh, that biotch again?"
Next day, I informed the owner of this incident. And I offered to pay for what copies I had made, prior to being dissed.
Guess what? Michelle got fired that day. And I continued to produce and publish my mag/rag.
It was a huge success. It carried the stigma of Michelle's attempt to stop me.
And as such, eventually, in a matter of weeks, Michelle was forced out of town by the townies who don't like Artist Repression...or her!
The item that inflamed her was a parody ad called "Big Eddie's &unt Shop".
Not an attack on or an abuse of women, but rather, "an attack on abusive women".
Oh! The Savage Irony!
