If you’re cruising down the highway in Hawaii, one thing you won’t see is a billboard. Hawaii became the first state to ban billboards in 1927, ensuring its natural beauty remains visible to millions of tourists every year. The ad-free trend didn’t catch on in the other states for a few decades.
Vermont was the first continental state to ban all billboards, passing that law in 1968. Maine removed all of its billboards in the late ‘70s, and Alaska passed a referendum in 1998 that prohibited billboards. Today, there are approximately 1,500 cities and communities across the U.S. that ban billboard advertisements.
